1864 John Naylor (the young anglo-catholic musician) sets up a robed choir at St Marys as a direct response to St Martins move to anglo-catholicism. - Educated St Peters School, York and Trinity College, Cambridge (1st class in classical tripos in 1894). Went to Australia 1895. Professor of Classics at Adelaide University. Returned to England 1927. One daughter (1st mge) one son.
Strong interest in Australian Rules Football.

- organist of St Peters Harrogate 1892-1902 and again 1917-1935. In 1924 his salary was 200 pa. Was musical advisor to and composed 50 tunes for the Methodist School Hymnal. Composed psalm chants (including No.101 in RSCM Chant Book, 1981). Communion Service in D (1883), God that Madest Earth & Heaven (Novello 1896), Lead Kindly Light (Novello 1895), O Perfect Love (1902), Through the Day thy love has spared us (Novello1898), Will God in Very Deed dwell with men (Banks, 1926) We sing a song of Christmas-time (Sullivan, arr Naylor, Metzler 1909)
